When you get a building quote ask yourself this - are you comparing apples with apples?

At first glance a quote from Stedone Homes will appear higher than that of a typical building quote, it is when you read the small print that you will be amazed. At Stedone Homes we don't hide costs in the small print. Our Development Cost Estimates (DCE) explain and highlight ALL of the costs involved when building a new home. Items such as architects fees, municipal costs, estate fees and interior decorating are things that you would normally never see in a quote from a traditional builder. Stedone Homes includes it all.

Backed up by the Stedone group of companies, Stedone Homes is able ensure that your brand new home is delivered on time, complete and ready to move in. Stedones reputation of high quality workmanship extends into the Homes company where on site project managers and skilled artisans ensure quality finishes. These set us apart from our competitors where lack of supervision, skill and planning almost always lead to delays, poor quality and incomplete jobs.

As a varsity student we were exposed to a book written by theorist Christian Norberg-Schulz - Genius Loci: Towards a Phenomenology of Architecture. This book made a distinct impression on me and I have come across sites where it becomes almost impossible to ignore...

In contemporary usage, genius loci usually refers to a location's distinctive atmosphere, or
a "spirit of place"

When approached by Graeme and Celia Davis to assist them with the design of their house (and I specifically use the word assist because it has been a team effort between fantastic clients, dedicated builders and craftsmen) on Erf 280 Simbithi – I was overwhelmed by the definite existence of a "spirit of place" on this specific site...

The challenge was to create an enclosure, a building and a home (not always the same thing) taking my cues from this "place".

After the survey was completed, specifically indicating the trees that were guarding this amazing site, we commenced with the design process. With the initial sketch plans at hand Graeme and Celia spent hours on week ends marking out the footprint, ‘walking' the house – ensuring that we fitted onto and in between our tree markers as we planned on paper... If you visit the house today, you will find a structure hidden between giants, creating spaces that have seemingly been there for many, many years.

With the materials used we created a play or tension between raw industrial and natural finishes. The boundary between internal and external spaces becomes blurred by the use of glass facades opening up to create visual and physical flow. Simplicity was our key design principle, creating a backdrop to the amazing beauty of the nature surrounding the house.

Architecture is a thing of art, a phenomenon of the emotions, lying outside questions of construction and beyond them. The purpose of construction is to make things hold together; of architecture to move us. Architectural emotion exists when the work rings within us in tune with a universe whose laws we obey, recognize and respect.

When certain harmonies have been attained, the work captures us. Architecture is a mater of "harmonies," it is a "pure creation of the spirit."

Le Corbusier, Vers une architecture

I hope that we have done justice to the spirit of erf 280 – and that the Davis Family will be captured by the beauty and harmony they have allowed!

We all want to make the world a better place and where better to start than Going Green! Becoming Eco Friendly can be seem a little overwhelming to begin with so follow these 10 basic tips to get you started in your new home and garden.
Consider using low wattage, motion sensor light bulbs for both indoors and outdoors. Outdoors, they can save a lot of money on wasted electricity but will illuminate your pathway to the door when needed. These are also good burglar deterrents, as the sudden switching on of a light is very disconcerting when unexpected.
Unplug electronic products when not being used. In the average home, 40 percent of all electricity used to power home electronics is consumed while the products are turned off.
Choose low flow toilet mechanisms. These use less water while still doing the same job as regular toilets. The average toilet accounts for one-third of home water consumption.
Run a full dishwasher rather than cleaning dishes by hand. Yes, it actually uses less water!
Start a compost pile or bin. Toss in fruit and vegetable scraps instead of throwing those items in your bin. Not only does it cut down your refuse it provides your garden with some organic material.
Water your lawn at night to avoid evaporation.
Plant trees to buffer homes from wind and to help shade air conditioning units and windows that get a lot of sun.
Use green cleaning methods. Vinegar, lemon juice, baking soda, and regular dish soap are all you really need for the majority of your household cleaning.
Pay your bills online and get statements delivered by email, less printing means less paper usage!
AND FINALLY - Recycle everything possible. Glass, metal, plastic, paper, cardboard (don't forget junk mail!) and more.
